MobileCom awarded new unified licence

11 Jun 2007

MobileCom, the wireless arm of Jordan Telecom has been awarded a new ‘unified licence’ by the country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC). The amended concession was signed by Dr Ahmad Hiasat, the CEO and Chairman of the TRC Board of Commissioners, and Mrs Majd Shweikeh, MobileCom CEO.

MobileCom won its mobile concession in October 1999, when it was known as the Petra Company for Mobile Services. In May 2000 it contracted Ericsson to supply its network components including the mobile switching system, and launched commercially on 15 September 2000. The cellco is something of a pioneer of mobile data services in the country and began offering GPRS on a trial basis in December 2001 with commercial launch taking place in May 2002. Two months later it launched MMS, accessible to both pre and post-paid users via GPRS/MMS handsets. In July 2004 it teamed up with Ericsson to launch Jordan’s first commercial EDGE network, offering data transmission rates of up to 384kbps.
