Ukraine to tender three 5GHz WiMAX licences

4 Jun 2007

Following the blocking of a WiMAX licensing plan in October 2006 by a local court, Ukraine’s National Commission on Communications Regulation (NCCR) has set a new date of 18 June 2007 to auction three 5GHz WiMAX concessions. The regulator plans to set the starting price for licences at UAH1.06 million (USD212,000). In October the planned auction was stalled by a plaintiff, Kiev-based International Information Technology Centre, filing a suit with the Kiev economic court, demanding that the tender be suspended. The company also sought to be amongst the bidders. After hearing the case, the court barred the watchdog from holding the tender until all disputes were solved with the Kiev firm. However, the commission filed an appeal, and in May 2007 the court ruled in its favour, giving the green light to the tender.
