Mozambique’s largest cellular operator mCel has promised to invest MZM1.5 million (USD60,000) each year to improve communications links in rural areas. mCel will fund the construction of computer rooms at internet centres and expand mobile coverage in outlying villages. Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique reports that mCel has signed a three-year agreement with the country’s Ministry of Science and Technology under the Millennium Villages project, which aims to implement a number of development strategies in all villages with over 5,000 inhabitants, including improving access to communications networks. mCel is wholly state-owned and claimed more than 1.1 milion subscribers at the end of 2006 according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
