Vodafone targets wireline market

Portugal’s second largest cellular operator Vodafone says it wants to win a 10% share of the country’s fixed line market within the next three to five years. The firm is launching broadband internet and converged fixed-mobile services as part of a push to increase its share of the overall telecoms market to 25% by 2010, up from 19% currently. Vodafone claims around 36% of the cellular sector at the moment, and hopes to boost this to 40%, according to a report from local newspaper Diario de Noticias.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Portugal has launched a new web phone service for its cellular customers. Subscribers with home broadband connections can link their computer with their mobile phone account and then use services such as voice and video calling, SMS and instant messaging from their PC. The service, which requires the customer to download an application to their computer form the Vodafone website, also allows users to import contacts from Microsoft Outlook and keep a record of their call history. Voice calls, video calls and chat messages between Vodafone web phone users are free, while voice calls, video calls, SMS and MMS to mobile and fixed networks are charged in accordance with the customer’s price plan.
