Fourth wireless operator licensed

Uganda has awarded a GSM mobile licence to Saudi Arabia’s HITS Telecom, making it the fourth wireless licensee in the east African country. According to HITS chief executive Edwin Rowell, the company plans to be operational by the end of this year, adding that it will invest USD343 million in GSM infrastructure. HITS will compete with MTN, Celtel and Uganda Telecom. HITS is reported to have GSM operations in Saudi Arabia (Bravo) and Yemen (HitsUnitel) as well as a broadband service in Nigeria.
