Telekom Malaysia expresses interest in Thai ventures

5 Mar 2007

Telekom Malaysia™ has announced an interest in forming a strategic partnership with Thailand-based full-service telco True Corp, and would also consider a venture with Thai state telco TOT in the event of its privatisation, writes the Bangkok Post, quoting Yusof Annuar Yaacob, the chief executive officer of TM International. ‘With strong brand recognition and the service convergence of the companies under True’s umbrella – from fixed line and mobile phones to broadband internet and pay television – we are now open for a joint venture,’ Mr Yaacob told the paper. ‘We are now excited to be a partner with True. We are only waiting for a response from True representatives.’ Mr Yaacob said that TM aimed to acquire up to 49% in True in a bid to contribute management and marketing experience as well as technology transfers, for the introduction of mobile services in particular. However, Supachai Chearavanont, the chief executive of True Corp, said his company did not need a strategic partner at the moment. If TM sought a presence in the company, he said, it could acquire True shares through the stock market.
