Alcatel & Globacom sign deal

5 Feb 2007

Nigeria’s second national operator (SNO), Globacom, has signed a USD600 million expansion deal with French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent. Under the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will expand Globacom’s mobile network capacity from its current twelve million subscribers to 35 million by the end of the year, as well as installing 300,000 fixed lines covering 13 Nigerian cities. The cellco, which operates under the banner Glo Mobile, had an estimated eight million customers at the end of September 2006, but had yet to launch fixed line services. The Alcatel-Lucent deal will see the building of a next generation network (NGN) and a dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) fibre-optic backbone, which will enable the future launch of 3G/UMTS services and introduction of IP/MPLS data transport.
