Over 34 million phone users in Nigeria

31 Jan 2007

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has released new statistics showing that there are now over 32 million mobile lines and more than 1.6 million fixed lines in the country. The regulator’s vice chairman Ernest Ndukwe disclosed the figures yesterday at the NCC’s headquarters in Abuja, and compared the situation now with that of five years ago, when there was little over 500,000 fixed and wireless lines. He added that investment had shot up from USD50 million during 2001 to USD8.5 billion by the end of 2006, and that the growth could be attributed to the liberalisation of the market. Nigeria is though to have one of the fastest growing telecoms sectors in the world. It is currently home to four GSM operators, with a fifth licence issued earlier this month to the Mubadala Development Company of the UAE.
