Digicel launches mobile TV

30 Jan 2007

Jamaica’s largest wireless operator Digicel has launched a mobile TV service. Powered by equipment from Vimio, the new service is available to both post-paid and pre-paid customers via the company’s nationwide GSM/GPRS network. In a press release, Digicel claimed to be the first cellco in the country to offer live, local mobile TV programming having signed content distribution deals with a number of the island’s broadcasters. Digicel has ambitious plans for the new offering, hoping to expand the service across its network of 22 markets later this year. It also expects to launch a number of ‘made for mobile’ channels which will feature regularly updated blocks of programming and live TV streaming.
