A group of Japanese cable operators are hatching a plan to form a joint venture organisation to promote fibre-optic services, according to Telecompaper citing the Nikkei Business Daily. The initiative will help the companies involved to compete with former monopoly NTT, and will see cablecos pooling their funds to market services to challenge the incumbent’s dominance in the segment. It is understood that the new venture will be led by Its Communication, will offer common branded broadband services across a range of hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) networks, and could involve an agreement with KDDI for telephony services. As many as 100 cable companies could come together under the new umbrella brand.
