Bulgaria’s largest mobile operator, Mobiltel, has announced that its customer base rose 19% to 4.27 million in 2006. Mobiltel, which is wholly owned by Telekom Austria, claimed a 52.5% market share at the end of the year, with competitors Globul, owned by Greek cellco Cosmote and Vivatel, controlled by domestic fixed line telco BTC, reporting three million and 600,000 customers respectively at the same date. According to the TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Bulgaria – a country of 7.74 million inhabitants – had a wireless penetration rate of 105.9% at the end of 2006, compared to just 78.6% a year earlier.
