WiMAX on the Horizon

16 Jan 2007

The US wireless broadband operator Horizon Wi-Com has selected Navini Networks to supply infrastructure for its 802.16e mobile WiMAX rollout. Horizon is deploying networks in the northeastern United States using WCS Block A spectrum acquired from Verizon. The first infrastructure will be rolled out in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond, and Cincinnati. Horizon executive Ron Olexa commented: ‘Our objective is to provide wireless last-mile access to residential, business and emergency restoration markets. We will start building the network in 1Q07, with a view to ongoing expansion and additional network deployments in the latter part of 2007.’

Navini’s Ripwave MX8 solution is based on 802.16e mobile WiMAX technology which has still to go through the certification process at the WiMAX Forum. Cellular operator Sprint Nextel also has plans to construct 802.16e-based platforms across the US, with its first services scheduled to be launched in Chicago and Washington DC at the end of this year. More information on global WiMAX deployments can be found in TeleGeography’s WiMAX Market Tracking Service.
