Fifth and final GSM licence issued; 3G on way

12 Jan 2007

Regulatory body the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that it has granted spectrum for GSM services in the 1800MHz and 900MHz bands to the Mubadala Development Company of the United Arab Emirates. The spectrum is part of a licence award that represents the fifth and final such licence for GSM services in the country.

In a separate but related story, the NCC also reiterated its intention – first declared last month – to issue radio spectrum in the 3G and 450MHz frequency bands. A public notice providing details about the spectrum on offer and the timeframes involved will be made available on the regulator’s web site in the near future.
