Mobile firms predict steady growth in 2007

3 Jan 2007

According to a report by the Bangkok Post, eight million new subscribers joined Thailand’s wireless networks in 2006, lifting the penetration rate to 60% with 39 million users, up from 48% or 30.5 million in 2005. Sigve Brekke, chief executive of second-placed cellco DTAC, is quoted as saying that he believes the penetration rate will rise to 70% in 2007, fuelled by rural first-time users. Wichien Mektrakarn, the president of market leader Advanced Info Service (AIS), said consumers in urban areas hunting for cheap tariffs would be another key growth driver, as mobile-phone users opted for more than two SIM cards. The rival chiefs acknowledged that competition would shift from price wars to interconnection tariff marketing tactics, in an effort to increase sales and retain customer bases.
