Umniah wins provisional fixed wireless access licence

20 Dec 2006

Umniah has won a 3.5GHz Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) licence from the Jordanian telecoms regulator, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC), with a bid of JOD8.3 million (USD11.7 million). This is the third significant investment by Bahrain-based Batelco in Jordan, where it owns and operates Batelco Jordan, and holds a 96% stake in Umniah. ‘Our acquisition of the BFWA licence in Jordan is another milestone to achieving profitable growth. It gives us the ability to further extend superior service to six million people in Jordan and allows us to improve economies of scale in our mobile business,’ said Batelco chief executive, Peter Kaliaropoulos.
