M-Tel launches 3G for pre-paid subscribers

18 Dec 2006

Bulgarian cellco MobilTel (M-Tel) has expanded its 3G offering to the pre-paid segment. M-Tel customers using Prima pre-paid cards may now make video calls and access mobile internet using its UMTS/HSDPA network. Video calls made within the M-Tel network will cost BGN0.69 (USD0.46) per minute. Prima customers will also be able to watch television on their mobiles on the Vodafone Live! multimedia portal. Vodafone Live also offers news, music, video clips, pictures, games, ringtones and software for phones.

In March 2006, a year after receiving its 3G licence, M-Tel launched its 3G network in Sofia, revealing that the network was also HSDPA capable, making it one of the first operators in the region to deploy the higher speed 3.5G service commercially. The new network, built by Ericsson, supports speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. Handsets are priced at BGN499 upwards.
