Lanka Bell, Reliance ink cable deal

18 Dec 2006

Sri Lankan wireless in the local loop (WiLL) operator Lanka Bell has signed a deal with India’s FLAG Telecom, part of the Reliance Group, to lay an undersea cable between the two countries. The USD27 million project will add a third landing station to an existing cable running from India to the Maldives, said Lanka Bell’s Managing Director, Damien Fernando. Lanka Bell has invested USD40 million to roll out fixed line telephony services across rural parts of Sri Lanka using low cost CDMA 800MHz technology. The investment has seen its customer base reach an estimated 300,000.
