Motorola and M-Tel ink expansion deal

US vendor Motorola has signed a deal with Nigerian cellco M-Tel to expand and upgrade the latter’s GSM network in the cities of Benin, Ikorudu and Yola. The contract is said to be worth USD75 million. M-Tel, a wholly owned subsidiary of incumbent telco NITEL, had an estimated 2.5 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter 2006, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, representing a 9% share of Nigeria’s 27 million or so mobile users.
