New mobile operator licensed

11 Dec 2006

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has awarded the local arm of Abu Dhabi-based Warid Telecom a licence to provide mobile phone services. The company will become the fourth wireless network operator in the country, operating in competition with MTN, Celtel and Uganda Telecom. Warid has said it will commit up to USD200 million in establishing the network, which it hopes will be operational by August 2007. The network will initially have capacity for 1.5 million subscribers, which will increase to four million subscribers in three to five years.
