MTC to invest in Mobitel’s network

Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) has announced it is to invest USD184.7 million to expand its Sudanese mobile subsidiary Mobitel’s network to cover over 70 cities and towns, making services available to around 80% of the population. Mobitel, a wholly owned subsidiary of MTC since February 2006, is the biggest cellco in Sudan, with just under 2.5 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter this year. A spokesman for MTC said that Mobitel was hoping to have a customer base of 4.5 million by the end of June 2007.
