Dialog tries more four-play moves

28 Nov 2006

Dialog Telekom, Sri Lanka’s biggest mobile operator, yesterday announced a plan to acquire 100% of shares in satellite pay-TV companies Communiqu Broadband Networks and CBN Sat for LKR523.8 million (USD4.86 million). Both acquisitions will be carried out through Dialog’s subsidiary, Asset Media, which it bought for LKR325 million in October. It has revealed plans to use Asset Media’s television and radio broadcasting licence to roll out a range of media services over platforms including television and mobile phones. In January 2006 Dialog completed a takeover of broadband network operator MTT and rebranded it as Dialog Broadband. The firm is now in the position to develop quadruple-play television, broadband, fixed line and mobile telephony services. Through the purchase of MTT, GSM operator Dialog also acquired a CDMA 450MHz WiLL licence, and it plans to launch a CDMA-based residential telephony service in January 2007.
