Over 7,000 former employees of the ailing incumbent NITEL are claiming that the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), the government body which oversaw the telco’s privatisation, has still not fulfilled its promise to pay them the benefits they are due. NGN87 billion (USD709.9 million) is owed to the workers in unpaid salaries and pensions after they were laid off in an effort to slim down the company to make it more attractive to potential buyers. Of 11,000 staff at the start of this year, less than 4,000 are being retained by Transcorp, NITEL’s new owners.
