KPN sells part of Telfort’s GSM spectrum to T-Mobile

22 Nov 2006

The Netherlands’ dominant fixed and mobile operator KPN yesterday confirmed it has sold off a portion of the radio spectrum belonging to wireless subsidiary Telfort, the company it acquired from Ramphastos Investment and Greenfield Capital Partners for EUR1.12 billion (USD1.43 billion) in October 2005. The transfer of 5MHz of spectrum in the 900MHz band will become effective from 1 September 2007 allowing T-Mobile to begin using the band for its own network. No financial details of the deal were disclosed. It is thought that KPN will no longer need the spectrum next year as a result of its plan to integrate KPN Mobile and Telfort’s GSM radio networks. The agreement is subject to the two sides securing approval from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
