SLT considers TV launch

10 Nov 2006

Sri Lanka Telecom, the country’s largest fixed line operator, has announced it is conducting due diligence on local cable television operator Grant Communications in a bid to enter the domestic TV market. SLT controls around 85% of the country’s fixed line market and has applied for a so-called ‘non-voice’ licence from the regulator and the media ministry in an effort to get permission to use cable and satellite technology in its future expansion plans. If approved, the operator will be able to take advantage of market convergence to offer its customers a quadruple-play service including CATV, broadband internet access, fixed line and mobile telephony.
