South Africa’s telecoms regulator ICASA has opened a public consultation period into the award of further licences which can be used for WiMAX wireless broadband services. ICASA is inviting comments regarding the procedures and criteria for offering new concessions. Three firms – Telkom, Neotel and Sentech – already hold licences covering the 3.5GHz band, while Sentech and WBS/iBurst have spectrum in the 2.6GHz range. Local website MyADSL reports that 60MHz of spectrum is still available at 3.5GHz and 126MHz is free at 2.6GHz.
