Government puts WESTEL up for sale

8 Nov 2006

According to Ghanaian newspaper The Statesman, the government has begun the process of selling the country’s second national operator (SNO) Western Telesystems Limited (WESTEL) to a strategic investor. People familiar with the deal say the process to find a buyer has already begun following the resolution of an argument between the operator and the state over contractual obligations. WESTEL has reportedly settled all its financial obligations, amounting to USD25 million, covering the company’s operations for the next eleven years. Databank and the National Trust Holding Company have been appointed to conduct the sale, which is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2007.
