Indian international telephony provider Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has posted an 18% increase in net profit to INR1.07 billion in its fiscal second quarter ended 30 September, the Tata Group company said in a statement. Telecoms revenues reached INR9.66 billion, up from INR9.29 billion in 2Q2005, on the back of a 25% quarterly rise in enterprise and carrier data volume. During the quarter, VSNL reduced prices of its international private leased circuits (IPLC) and internet leased lines (ILL) by up to 25% and 40% respectively. It also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Etisalat, Saudi Telecom, Telecom Egypt and Telecom Italia Sparkle for the construction of a new cable system, christened India-Middle East-Western Europe (I-ME-WE).
