Kosovo sets date for second wireless licence auction

30 Oct 2006

The government of Kosovo has announced it will hold a tender for a licence to operate the province’s second mobile telephone network. Interested candidates will have until 17 January 2007 to submit their bids, with the winner expected to be announced at the end of February. According to Qemajl Ahmeti, Kosovo’s telecoms minister, the tender will take the form of a beauty contest, with the price set at EUR20 million. The newcomer will compete with Vala-900, a subsidiary of Kosovo’s fixed line operator PTK and Monaco Telecom, which was awarded Kosovo’s first GSM licence in 2001.
