MNP delayed by a year

16 Oct 2006

Pakistan’s wireless operators have pledged to implement mobile number portability (MNP) in January 2007, a full year later than planned, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). In April 2005 the PTA announced that mobile number portability (MNP) should be introduced from 1 January 2006, but the service has been delayed by a failure to agree charges for calls between ported numbers, whilst fixed line incumbent Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) has cited a string of technical problems in its attempts to implement the necessary changes to its network and systems for MNP. All operators have now provided assurances that they will meet the new deadline.
