Ministry to push for TOT, CAT board merger

13 Oct 2006

Thailand’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has announced a plan to merge the boards of TOT Corp and CAT Telecom in an attempt to boost the competitiveness of the two state-owned telcos and eradicate overlapping investments. New MICT Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom said yesterday: ‘Both [TOT and CAT] have tried to merge for years, but have failed to do so. So I must try a new way because the old methods have proven unsuccessful. The merged board will see how to improve the state agencies’ competitiveness and share investment.’ Previous merger plans have failed, due largely to staff protests and the lack of a serious push from successive governments.
