UMC shuts down NMT

10 Oct 2006

Ukraine’s second largest cellco Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) has shut down its analogue NMT-450 mobile network, reports Cellular News quoting a company statement. The move follows the Ukrainian government’s ruling on 9 June which classified NMT as an obsolete standard, and a statement from UMC at the end of August declaring its intention to migrate all remaining analogue users to its GSM platform. Earlier this year the company obtained a CDMA-450 operating licence and it is currently holding a tender for the supply of CDMA equipment; it hopes to test CDMA data and voice services in the 450MHz band by the end of the year.
