3 Ireland’s coverage reaches 80% mark

20 Sep 2006

Hutchison 3G Ireland’s UMTS network now covers over 80% of the population, according to reports from Cellular-news. 3 Ireland began its network rollout in early 2004, in partnership with Nokia, NEC and Siemens Mobile, and has since deployed and integrated over 540 radio sites. It launched commercial services under the 3 brand name in July 2005 and augments its 3G network by offering 2.5G services in the rest of the country via a network roaming deal with Vodafone, extending its reach to 99.5% of the population. 3 says it is now well ahead of schedule to beat the regulatory requirement of 85% population coverage by the end of 2007 as stipulated by ComReg in its 3G licence agreement.
