Irish Broadband extends network reach

Wireless broadband service provider Irish Broadband has completed a EUR13 million expansion of its network, doubling its geographic reach in the process, writes SiliconRepublic.com. The expansion is designed to support new technologies such as WiMAX and extends its coverage to Swords and Coolock in Dublin, Summerville in Waterford and Raheen in Limerick; the phased rollout is planned to continue well into 2007. The company’s proprietary wireless technology is currently available in Dublin City and County, Cork City, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Dundalk, Drogheda, Bray, Tralee, Ennis, Kilkenny, Navan, Carlow, Wexford, Athlone, Newbridge, Letterkenny, Celbridge, Leixlip, Greystones, Portlaoise, Killarney, Arklow, Wicklow, Maynooth, rural north/south Kildare, rural north Louth, Killaloe/Ballina, north Donegal, Oranmore/Carnmore and Claregalway.

Irish Broadband has hinted that is also considering a move into the mobile market. A spokesman for the firm said: ‘The practical benefits of this technology will start to be seen next year with the arrival of the first dual GSM/WiMAX mobile phones.’
