SLT mulls takeover of payphone firm

11 Sep 2006

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) told local press on Friday that it is in talks to buy a stake in the island’s largest payphone operator Tritel Services. Malaysian-owned Tritel utilises CDMA technology and piggybacks on other operators’ networks to connect over 3,000 phone booths spread nationwide. SLT’s chief Executive, Shuhei Anan, said that the state-run telco ‘has decided to undertake a due diligence exercise of Tritel to expand access coverage, in an attempt to reach the entirety of Sri Lanka.’ SLT currently operates around 2,000 payphones of its own.
