Digicel wins licence in Papua New Guinea

Digicel Pacific, the South Pacific arm of Caribbean cellco Digicel, has announced that it has been awarded a licence to operate a GSM network in Papua New Guinea. With a population of 5.9 million and mobile penetration of just 1%, the country is ripe for investment and Digicel Papua New Guinea expects to launch services in March 2007. According to Denis O’Brien, Chairman of Digicel Pacific, his company is committed to building a seamless pan-South Pacific GSM network, and to date has been awarded concessions by the governments of Samoa and Fiji.
