Chinese vendor ZTE has won a contract to expand Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT)’s CDMA-based wireless in the local loop (WiLL) network, by deploying what it calls the ’world’s first’ IOS 5.0-based CDMA2000 system. SLT´s existing 800MHz CDMA network has two softswitches, one in Colombo and a second in Anuradhapura, and the new deployment will enlarge the network to cover approximately 300,000 subscribers across the island. ZTE converted the network to an IP-based CDMA2000-based system in April this year, rolling out an all-IP hardware platform incorporating NGN softswitch technology. It won SLTs original tender for the project in September 2005.
