Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) will shut down its NMT-450MHz mobile services on 31 August 2006, according to a company statement. The move follows the government’s ruling on 9 June to classify the standard as outdated and to phase out any existing NMT cellular services. UMC is aiming to persuade all its NMT subscribers to switch to GSM services free of charge with an offer to retain their current phone numbers. Last month UMC revealed plans to use its 450MHz spectrum to launch a fixed-wireless CDMA 450MHz network in December, which will offer wireless internet access and data transfer services to cities with over a million inhabitants, including Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa and Kharkiv.
