Volný plans IPTV launch by year-end

14 Aug 2006

Czech alternative operator Volný is planning to launch an internet protocol television (IPTV) service before the end of 2006, according to its chief executive officer and chairman Clemens Wohlmuth. The company, which introduced an ADSL-based 10Mbps plus connection in April, has recently re-branded from Czech On Line to Volný and its CEO hopes to improve the new brand name with the introduction of innovative services, such as the recently launched voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) for mobile phones. Mr Wohlmuth points out that the domestic telecoms market has undergone a period of consolidation in the last year – including the acquisitions made by GTS Novera and Radiokomunikace. Volný’s supreme confirmed that his firm had looked at several companies, but had decided instead to grow organically and invest in the rollout of its own network infrastructure. Volný is focusing its efforts on developing local loop unbundling (LLU), to gain access to the networks of the dominant operator Telefónica O2 (formerly Cesky Telecom).
