11 Aug 2006

Ukraine’s fourth largest mobile operator Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS) has increased the number of its GSM base stations by 60% since the beginning of the year to over 1,000, its press office reported yesterday. URS, re-launched under parent Vimpelcom’s Beeline brand in April, now has a network footprint covering 245 cities and towns, including all regional centres, as well as key highways and resort areas, representing more than 50% of the population. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, it had 573,000 subscribers at the end of June, up from 278,000 at the end of March, and is aiming for 80% population coverage by the end of 2006, and over five million subscribers by mid-2008. In July 2006 it signed a unilateral national roaming deal with the country’s smallest cellco Golden Telecom.
