Third Serbian mobile operator expected soon

7 Aug 2006

According to Belgrade-based online news service B-92, at least two foreign telecoms companies are preparing to bid for a forthcoming third wireless licence. The pair already touted as bidders are Telekom Austria’s Mobilkom, which last week lost out to Telenor in the purchase of Mobi-063, and Israel’s Cellcom; the latter has reportedly expressed an interest in buying Telecom Serbia’s paging network over which it hopes to overlay a new wireless network. According to B-92, Cellcom could be considering a joint bid in partnership with Orange. Mobilkom CEO Boris Nemsic said after the Mobi-063 auction that his company would submit a request for the third wireless licence as soon as the government had signed the contract with Telenor.
