Nokia and Finnet trial combined W-LAN/GSM handset

31 Jul 2006

Finnish vendor Nokia has teamed up with local telecoms operator the Finnet Group to launch its first public Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) pilot over Wireless-LAN (W-LAN) and GSM networks in the city of Oulu. The live trial will last at least two months and will see fifty families in the city equipped with a new Nokia 6136 mobile handset, which integrates UMA technology to allow for seamless handover of voice and data connections between GSM cellular and W-LAN networks. The City of Oulu last year initiated its Pan Oulu project which enables citizens to receive free W-LAN internet via public hotspots around the city, providing an ideal environment to test the UMA technology.
