27 Jul 2006

Ukraine’s second largest GSM mobile operator Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) plans to launch a CDMA 450MHz network in December, a spokesperson told Prime-Tass yesterday. The company received a licence for the network on 13 July, costing UAH94 million (USD19.5 million), and intends to use it to provide wireless internet access and data transfer services to cities with over a million inhabitants, including Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa and Kharkiv. In the first rollout phase, UMC plans to install 70 CDMA base stations, the spokesperson said, adding that in order to provide full mobile CDMA services it would require an additional licence.
