Celtel International has relaunched Madagascan cellco Madacom in its own image and revealed bold plans for the expansion of the operator. Celtel Madagascar wants to boost subscriber numbers to two million by the end of 2007, from 250,000 at the start of this year. It plans to invest around USD36 million to expand Madacom’s network to rural areas and 80% of the population by the end of 2008 and will introduce more advanced multimedia services including GPRS and MMS. Celtel International, a subsidiary of MTC of Kuwait, paid USD97 million for its 66% stake in the company in December 2005.
