MTN to apply for Nigerian 3G licence

22 Jun 2006

According to Reuters, pan-African cellco MTN plans to apply for a 3G licence in Nigeria by the end of 2006. MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Bola Akingbade also told Reuters his company may buy one of the country’s smaller private network operators, which are undercutting GSM companies with cheaper tariffs. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Nigeria is one of the world’s fastest growing mobile markets, with total wireless subscribers soaring from around 400,000 at the end of 2001 to 18.6 million at the end of 2005. Akingbade forecasts that there will be 24 million customers by the end of 2006, and that the 40 million barrier will be breached by 2010.
