Mongolia’s largest CDMA wireless operator Skytel, has awarded ZTE a contract for the construction of the world’s first CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A network. The new network is expected to be complete by the end of the third quarter. The Rev. A network will serve subscribers in a number of Mongolia’s major cities including Darkhan, Erdenet and the capital Ulan Bator. It will be capable of downlink speeds of 3.1Mbps and uplink speeds of up to 1.8Mbps. SkyTel is 37%-owned by three local companies, Altai Holding, MCS Holding and Univcom, with the remainder split between Korean enterprises SK Telecom (28%) and cable manufacturer Taihan Electric Wire (35%).
