Cable & Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) has announced the launch of a pre-paid fixed line service, in a move which it hopes will reverse the trend of customers abandoning wireline services and opting instead for wireless. The new pre-paid service will be available in the Kingston metropolitan area, St Catherine and St James in the first instance, with the rest of the island coming on stream on a phased basis by 3 July. Takers will be required to pay a JMD770 (USD13) activation charge and then buy pre-paid cards with denominations ranging from JMD60 to JMD2,000. Since 2000 CW&J has seen its fixed line base fall from 500,000 to 33,000. Conversely wireless subscriptions have jumped from 300,000 in 2000 to 2.5 million at the end of 2005.
