Mobitel Sudan awards Ericsson network expansion deal

30 May 2006

Mobitel Sudan, part of the Kuwaiti MTC group, has signed a EUR78 million contract with Ericsson for the expansion of its network. Under the terms of the deal, Ericsson will supply equipment to increase capacity by 1.5 million new lines by the end of the year. Further, the company intends to boost capacity by an additional million users in the first quarter of 2007.

In February 2006 MTC acquired the outstanding 61% of Mobitel for USD1.33 billion, to take its interest to 100%. Since then the company has revealed ambitious investment plans for its Sudanese operation, planning to spend USD500 million over the next three to five years with the aim of supporting a target customer base seven million by 2008. As it stands Mobitel has two million customers and a market share of 85%.
