PCCW launches trial of CMB-based 3G mobile TV service

16 May 2006

Hong Kong-based operator PCCW yesterday announced the launch of real-time television broadcasts of its Now TV channels to 3G mobile phones using Cell Multimedia Broadcast (CMB), a technology developed by Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies to enable broadcasts to reach more users simultaneously than streaming or videoconference technology. PCCW executive Alex Arena said the CMB system allows up to 250 mobile users to simultaneously tune in to TV broadcasts within an area covered by one base station, compared to a maximum of ten users with streaming technologies. Channels available to around 100,000 users of PCCW’s trial 3G service include a 24-hour financial channel, ESPN, Star Sports, and a channel showing English Premier League football matches.
