Cablecos to enter voice telephony market

10 May 2006

According to reports in the Czech newspaper Mlada Fronta Dnes, two of the country’s largest cable television and internet access providers are launching telephone services via their cable networks. UPC Ceska Republic, a unit of United Pan-Europe Communications, plans to begin offering the new service by the middle of this month, undercutting the prices of incumbent Cesky Telecom, and will be the first Czech operator to offer a so-called triple-play service. Meanwhile, rival cableco Karneval Media also plans to provide telephone services via cable, the newspaper said. Not to be outdone, Cesky Telecom recently announced that it would offer television via phone lines before the end of the year.
