Union looks to block Babcock takeover plan

27 Apr 2006

Ireland’s Communications Workers Union (CWU) may try to block Babcock & Brown’s proposed takeover of Irish incumbent eircom, according to reports from Bloomberg. In an e-mailed statement the union’s president Jerry Browne said the body would do ‘all in its power’ to protect its members’ pay and working conditions, adding that, ‘If necessary we will use all our influence to block any such sale unless we are given the type of assurances necessary.’

The CWU is seeking reassurances over the Australian company’s long term commitment to eircom, particularly where this might impact on pay and conditions, future employment and investment. Babcock & Brown has offered EUR2.36 billion for Ireland’s largest telecoms company and has the backing of eircom’s Employee Share Ownership Trust (ESOT).
